4.33 The Dream, The Doing, and the Importance of Reading

4.33 The Dream, The Doing, and the Importance of Reading
Jeffery Oliver

I’ve been reading Ed Burns book, “Independent Ed,” on indie filmmaking and I was surprised last night to discover a life lesson I’ve been wrestling with for years. Also some Edgar Allan Poe for Halloween. Here are those references:

Edgar Allan Poe: “Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.”

Ed Burns: “I wanted to keep it real. I wanted to look at the dreamers who couldn’t articulate their dreams. They just knew there was more to life than what they were living. They had a burning desire to get out of their hometown but had no idea where to go or what to do. This wasn’t going to be a movie about the ordinary working-class person who dreams of being a painter, a novelist, or a rock star and, halfway through the movie pulls that old typewriter out of the closet, sits down, and writes the masterpiece. The people in my new story were stuck in a rut. Same shit, different day, or Long Time, Nothing New.” From “Independent Ed: What I Learned From My Career of Big Dreams, Little Movies, and the Best 12 Days of My Life (affiliate link)”
